What's Opening Near River West This Summer, And Where To Point Your Evenings

The stretch of westside Bend that River West residents actually use in July is smaller than it looks on a map. It runs from the Jackstraw block on SW Industrial Way, up through the Box Factory and Century Drive, and out to the Galveston strip. Almost every notable food and gathering opening announced for summer 2026 lands somewhere on that spine. If you live on this side of the Deschutes, the next two months will change your default answers to "where should we walk to?" more than any summer in recent memory.

The thesis of this post is simple. You do not need to cross the river to find what's new.

The Century Drive corner is quietly becoming the anchor

The most-watched opening of the summer sits on a narrow lot behind Powder House Ski & Patio off SW Century Drive. Base Camp, the McGee family's long-planned food truck lot and event space, is targeting a mid-July soft opening. Todd and Shanda McGee, who have run the ski shop for 25 years, spent years road-tripping to other food cart lots before designing the main building themselves. The result is a 7,000-square-foot structure with barn wood walls, forty-foot ceilings, seven roll-up garage doors, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a rooftop garden built atop repurposed shipping containers.

Inside and out you get:

• 36 taps and a full bar with specialty wine and spirits
• 10 food trucks, curated through a taste test with more than thirty Powder House staff members, including Luckey's Woodsman Trailside Kitchen and Jazzy Joe Coffee Co.
• Two interior kiosks, a higher-end Let's Roll Sushi counter and a Jazzy Joe kiosk with coffee, sandwiches, and house-made ice cream
• An 18-foot projector screen and a sports and events watch hub
• A 1,000-square-foot covered, heated patio and a 50-foot belly bar

Full heating and air conditioning were a deliberate choice, since the McGees designed the space as a four-season hub rather than a summer-only patio. Oldest son Hayden will run it as general manager.

What that means in practical terms for someone living within a mile: you now have a walk-or-quick-drive option that solves the "we can't agree on dinner" problem, works for a rehearsal dinner or a big-group birthday, and holds up when the weather turns in October. The old default, driving to the Box Factory or downtown, becomes optional.

A block up Century Drive, Casa Sur opened in early May in the former Crave Bend space at 335 SW Century Dr. It's a father-and-son project from Reyes Nava, who spent about fifteen years as executive chef at another Bend Mexican restaurant, and his son Alex. The menu leans southern Mexican, drawing from Guerrero, where the Nava family is from. Farther up the same road, at 515 Century Drive between the OSU-Cascades campus and Terava Apartments, Haven Bagels and Coffee is opening a second location in late summer. The original shop, in Reed South, has built a following on organic-ingredient bagels and gluten-free options since August 2024.

Three openings on the same road within six months. That is not a coincidence, and it is not a coincidence that the road runs to Mt. Bachelor.

Industrial Way finally gets its ground-floor tenant

For most of the last year, the Jackstraw at 310 SW Industrial Way has been a residential building looking for its retail identity. The 313-unit complex, adjacent to the Box Factory, began welcoming tenants in October and rents units from studios around $1,700 up to three-bedrooms near $4,000. The ground-floor commercial space had been announced but not activated.

That changes this summer with Way West, a bar and deli partnership between Bend Brewing Company and Sisters Meat & Smokehouse. Sisters Meat & Smokehouse handles sandwiches, deli meats, and cuts. Bend Brewing pours the beer and cocktails and runs a food menu alongside. Packy Deenihan, one of Bend Brewing's owners, described it in The Bulletin as a permit-delayed project that pushed the opening from spring into early summer. As of the Source's April restaurant guide, it was still tracking as a summer opening on SW Industrial Way.

For River West households, Way West matters because it fills the closest gap on the map. The Box Factory has been the westside's default weeknight anchor for years. A second option two doors down that pairs a known brewery with a known smokehouse changes how the block functions on a Friday.

Galveston keeps its role as the everyday street

Galveston Avenue is not trying to become Century Drive, and that is part of the point. Its summer addition is small and specific. Powder Hound Doughnuts, a family shop from Matthew and Whitney Elliott, opened in March at 1366 NW Galveston Ave in the former Bo's building. The concept is deliberately traditional. Classic donuts, coffee, and a stated intention to serve as a neighborhood spot rather than a destination.

That fits the street. Galveston already works as the walk-with-coffee, ride-your-bike-to-breakfast corridor for a big share of River West. A donut shop calibrated to weekday mornings rather than Instagram lines is a better fit for that pattern than another sit-down concept would have been.

The summer calendar you can walk or bike to

The food scene is only half the reason your evenings shift in July. The other half is the free programming clustered close to the river.

Munch & Music has run in Drake Park since 1991, which makes it older than most of the restaurants covered above combined. This year's Thursday lineup includes Leftover Salmon and Larry and his Flask, with food carts arranged along the Deschutes. For anyone living within a walking radius of Drake Park, the calculation each Thursday is not whether to go, but which side of the river to enter from.

Balloons Over Bend, in its 2026 edition on July 24 to 26, keeps its sunrise launches at R.E. Jewell Elementary on Murphy Road in southeast Bend. The 6 a.m. setup and roughly 6:45 to 7 a.m. launch window is not walkable from River West, but the Friday evening Night Glow at COCC's athletic field is close. Gates open at 5 p.m. with two FlippenOut trampoline shows, the Balloon Blast kids race, live music from the Tri-Cities Steel Drum Band, and the actual glow after balloons roll out around 8:30 p.m.

Two of the three signature moments of the weekend happen on your side of the river.

What this adds up to for someone already living here

If you moved to River West two summers ago, your walkable evening options were the Box Factory, a handful of Galveston mainstays, and whatever was happening in Drake Park. The 2026 additions do three specific things:

1. Fill the four-season gap. Base Camp's full HVAC and covered heated patio, plus Way West's indoor bar-deli format, mean the westside gains two spots that hold up in November as well as July.
2. Compress the drive radius. A resident heading out for dinner and a drink now has three new anchors, Base Camp, Way West, and Casa Sur, all west of the river and none more than a short drive from the neighborhood core.
3. Reinforce Century Drive as a corridor, not a route. With Base Camp, Casa Sur, and Haven Bagels all opening within blocks of one another, the road stops being a way to Bachelor and starts being a destination on its way to Bachelor.

It is the kind of change that River West residents will feel through small shifts in habit, where the standing Thursday reservation moves, where the Sunday morning coffee run ends up, which patio wins the last warm evening in September.
